A Trip To Nashville

We left behind lots of very good friends when we left Texas. New Year’s weekend we got the chance to see some of them.  Emma Price was one of Benjamin’s school mates in preschool in Texas … probably his best friend.  We became very good friends with her parents.  When the opportunity presented itself we jumped at the chance to meet them in the middle somewhere.  We all decided on Nashville.

Benjamin was so excited at the prospect of seeing Emma again. About every two miles he’d ask us how much farther. That started getting a little old so Allison told him that we’d let him know every ten miles that we travelled.

When we first made our plans we thought we’d be staying at The Gaylord. The Prices had a camper though and were staying at the local Jellystone Park. It turns out that they have cabins that you can rent.  We thought that it would be a lot nicer and more convenient to be closer to our friends, so it was the cabin for us!  It also turns out that they had a Christmas light show that people staying at the camping area could go through for free (it was $25/car for everyone else) along with a kids area with bounce houses, a stand with fair type food, and a petting zoo.  The light show was actually pretty amazing.  We were at the park for four nights and we drove through the show three of them.

We spent New Year’s Eve in the cabin. We only stayed up to watch the ball drop in New York city which was 11pm since we were in Central Time. Even at that I was surprised that all of the kids made it. Maybe it had to do with the fact that they all got Christmas presents. In the case of our boys it was for the fourth time.

There wasn’t a whole lot open on New Year’s Day.  One thing that was open was the Adventure Science Center.  It’s a science museum with a million things for kids to do.  I think that the children would have been happy staying there all day, but the grown ups started to get hungry … and hungry leads to hangry.

On our last full day in Nashville we decided to head over to the Gaylord. There was a carved ice display in their convention center that we thought might be worth a look. It certainly was. Ben didn’t want to go in at first, but he warmed up to the idea. See what I did there? It was beautiful, and the slide was a lot of fun. It would have been more fun if we’d brought gloves and hats though. Luckily the coats were provided. Allie wondered how they were going to remove all of that ice when they were done. Brandon and I figured that they just turned off the air conditioning and let nature take its course.

After visiting the ice display we walked over to the hotel proper. That place is huge. It seems to be built around three huge arboretums. One of them even had a little boat ride that you could take while the “captain” gave a little talk about the history of the place. It was like a little self contained city.  We sure had fun in the camp ground, but maybe we’ll stay in the hotel on our next trip.

Dancing Fountain

For our last night in Nashville we first took another drive through the light show (of course) then headed over to the Price’s RV for hotdogs on the grill, a camp fire, and smores. The kids ran around like crazy people playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Even little Anna got in on the fun. Noah loves smores … like he would probably eat them until he threw up. Ben wouldn’t eat them, but he had a blast roasting marshmallows. It was a great way to spend our last night with friends.

After a sad farewell on Sunday morning we hit the road and headed home. It was marvelous to see Brandon, Deedee, Emma, and Anna. We’ll definitely to it again. Promises have already been made.

Christmas Weekend

After we’d finished our family Christmas it was time to pack up the car and head out to Nana and Peepop’s house.

We got there relatively early Friday evening and it was time for the boys to have their third go at opening presents.

One of the things that Ben got was a Pogo Jumper.  He had a lot of fun with that while we were in Waynesboro.  Unfortunately we can’t really use it in Lake Wylie until we move to the house.  The people below us in the apartment are pretty sensitive about the noise we make up here.

We had a great time with Nana and Peepop.  The only thing that was a bit of a downer was the Ciro’s Pizza was closed for the holiday.  We did get to have Allie’s lasagna though.  That was a fine tradeoff for me.  I’ll take that lasagna over just about anything.

Christmas Morning

We drove home from Grammy’s house so that the kids could have Christmas morning where Santa was going to drop the presents.  We wanted to have a family Christmas so we made sure to schedule things so that could happen.

20151224_231542

Benjamin brought reindeer food home from school, so we had to be sure to put that out.  Santa’s reindeer have just as long of a night as Santa, and he gets loads of milk and cookies.  The reindeer need a little treat too.

The kids actually didn’t wake us up too terribly early in the morning.  When they did wake up there was certainly no shortage of presents around the tree.  There were also a few treats and a “farewell until next year” from Jack the elf.

For the second time, everyone was very happy with their presents.

Christmas Eve

It was a very busy holiday season.  The plan was to head to Wadesboro for Christmas Eve with Grammy.  Head back to Lake Wylie so the kids could wake up at home and open presents, then head to Waynesboro Christmas afternoon to spend the rest of the day with Nana and Peepop.  We’d come home for a few days and then head off to Nashville to spend the New Year’s weekend with the Prices (friends from Texas).  There was a lot going on, but it was all worth it.

This is only some of the appetizers.

This is only some of the appetizers.

First it was off to Grammy’s house for Christmas Eve dinner.  She made way too much food … as usual.  I was pretty darned full on all the yummy appetizers before we even sat down for the meal.  There were a few other people there that I’d met at Thanksgiving.  We were all amazed at how much food there was, and this was after Allison had told Gibby that she shouldn’t cook that much.  There were six adults and two kids there (one of which doesn’t even eat) and I’ll bet there was enough food for twenty-five people.  If you eat at Gibby’s house you will not go hungry.

People weren’t the only ones in attendance.  Bucky was also there, of course.  He just loves ice cream, and Benjamin loves feeding it to him even more than he loves eating it.

Dana always dressed up as Santa and Gibby still has the suit.  Perhaps the torch has been passed.  We’ll have to wait and see, but Noah sure does look good in the suit.

Finally it was time to open presents.  It turns out that it was only the first of many.  Everyone was very happy with the presents given and received.  Noah especially loved an authentic bomber jacket.  I think he wore it everywhere except for bed for a week straight … even when it was seventy degrees outside.  Christmas was off to a great start for all.

It’s Not All About The House

We actually do other things besides worry about the house.  A couple of weeks ago our family was asked to do the reading response and light the candle for the third week of advent at church.

20151213_110513

I lit the candle, Noah did the reading (Allie held the microphone for him) and he did a great job.  Ben didn’t want to get up (no surprise) but it was a wonderful family event.

Benjamin had his school Christmas pageant last week.  It was really cute.  He was too shy, but he did manage to get up on stage.  He spent a lot of time trying to hide and peeking around his friends trying to get a glimpse of the crowd.  I don’t think that he sang at all, which is a real shame.  He knew all of the songs.  He sang them at the dinner table every night.  I think that he just get freaked out by all of the grownups.

20151217_112627 20151217_112928

This past Sunday the boys had their church music class Christmas show.  We wanted to have an early dinner before the show.  We made a ham, some stuffing, some veggies, and Allison’s yummy mashed potatoes.  Benjamin wanted to help out, so we got him peeling some potatoes.  This apartment is pretty small and has zero kitchen counter space so naturally they peeled the potatoes right in the living room.

20151220_132025

The show was the story of the luminary.  Noah was the innkeeper which was a main character.  Benjamin was the innkeeper’s son.  Ben started out very shy again, but ended up on stage.  He seemed to have the most fun constantly pulling off his brother’s headpiece.  It sure got a giggle out of the audience.

After the show luminaries were handed out all around.  I’m not sure if we’ll actually use the ones that we have since we’ll be travelling all over the place, but it was a nice gesture.

The Roof Is Going On

We went out to the site this morning to meet with Sonia.  We were there to talk about the kitchen layout and to pick up cabinet samples.  We’re picking out cabinetry for every room that needs it.  When we arrived we saw a couple of vans with ladders on them pulling up.  It seems that the roofers were there to work on a Saturday.  I was really curious how much they might get done in one day so we came back around 3pm.  I still heard them working, but it was at the back of the house.  The front wasn’t complete, but they’d made some pretty good progress.

20151219_135205

20151219_135128

We’ll probably drive by again tomorrow just because sometimes you just can’t keep away.  I’ll bet that if they didn’t get done today then they probably will on Monday at some point.

We think that we’ve made our cabinet choices also.  It only took a couple of hours.  It’s a little difficult (or maybe easier) because we’re making the decision in a vacuum.  We kind of know the wood and finish we’d like, and we kind of know the paint colors.  We have a general look in mind for the countertops, but we really don’t know what we’re going to do about any tile anywhere in the house yet.  I guess that one decision drives the next.  It’s probably a good idea that the tile choice is still to come.  There are a million different possibilities out there and hopefully some earlier choices will help narrow the decision a bit.  We’ll see how it goes.

A Little More Progress

Last week we met the wife of the builder out at a plumbing supply store about twenty minutes away.  Sonia is Chuck’s partner in business.  He takes care of the outside and she handles the stuff on the inside.  We wanted to start the process of picking out sinks and fixtures.  It’s time to start the plumbing and electrical rough ins so we need to start making these decisions.

The way it works is that the builder has standard equipment that they supply.  It’s pretty nice, but it may not be exactly what you want, so they give you the option to choose other stuff.  If you end up going cheaper (yeah right!) then you save a little money.  If you end up going more expensive then they let you know how much you’re over and you pay the difference.  I think that we may go over a little.  Apparently the finish we chose for most of the fixtures saves us a little money.  We added some options that will cost us some money too though.  I get the sense that we went into the overage zone.

Last weekend we armed the boys with their tablets and a couple of lawn chairs and ventured out to meet her again but at the lot this time.  We went to plan out the placement and numbers of outlets as well as placement, numbers, and types of lights and/or ceiling fans.  I suspected we’d be there for an hour … maybe an hour and a half.  It turned out to be a little more than three hours.  It was getting dark when we left.  This sort of thing requires a lot more time and thought than I realized.

When you have the option to place things like that anywhere that you’d like then the decisions can take a while.  Thank goodness we had her along.  She came up with a lot of suggestions and ideas that we hadn’t even considered.  We contributed a few ideas of our own too, like outlets under all of the front windows in case we want to plug in electric candles at Christmas and a couple of outlets in the eaves for Christmas lights.  Next up, kitchen design!

A Long, Fun Saturday Out Of The Apartment

We hate sticking around this apartment if we don’t have to.  We really don’t like it here very much.  So, most weekends we try to find things to do that will get us out of here.  Sometimes the things that get us out of here are the typical errands that families need to do all the time like shopping and … well, shopping.  Allison did a little research on any events that might be taking place this weekend and she found a couple.  She’s pretty darned good at that.

There’s a place that we’ve been to a couple of times called the Carolina Aviation Museum.  Apparently Santa was supposed to climb out of a little airplane there and spend some time with kids.

20151212_113149

20151212_113318

It turns out that Santa had a back injury that kept him out of the plane, and Ben was too shy to talk to him, but Noah did.  Even though Ben was too shy to talk to Santa, he sure wasn’t too shy to climb in his airplane

This place is pretty cool.  It’s mostly built around the actual plane from US Airways Flight 1549.  It’s a big hanger with the Airbus as the central exhibit and lots of other planes surrounding it.  There are also a couple of larger historical planes parked outside the hanger on the tarmac.  This is actually part of Charlotte International Airport so the museum is apparently constantly fighting with TSA to keep the outside display open.  Not only did they have the usual displays and Santa, but they also had an area for the boys to color some little, crafty airplanes and to make a homemade compass.  Fun was had by all.

After a few hours at the museum we made a necessary Sam’s Club run.  With our wallets a bit lighter and the back of the car weighted down we headed back to the apartment.  It would only be a short stay though … just long enough to drop off the perishables.  We were hungry and there were more festivities to participate in.

20151212_173537

We headed off to T-Bones on the Lake for dinner.  We got seated at a table by the window.  T-Bones has it’s own little marina, and the annual Lake Wylie boat parade was set to start at dark.  Noah got to see Santa yet again, and Ben was too scared to talk to him … yet again.  They were even giving away little stuffed animals, which was a nice touch.

The boat parade was pretty fun.  Ben liked all of the lights on the boats, and Noah actually saw a couple of friends from school.  We let him go off with them a couple of times.  He’s growing up … which sucks … but is pretty cool too.

20151212_194132

After the boat show we still weren’t quite ready to head home … Ice Cream!  Our go to ice cream store is Bruster’s.  They have bunches of flavors standard plus loads of seasonal flavors.  When we first got there Noah was a little disappointed that they didn’t have the flavor he was looking forward to.  He got over it pretty quickly though.  Ben is never disappointed since his favorite, the only flavor he’ll eat as a matter of fact, is “bunilla”.

It was a fun day, but it was a long day.  Everyone slept pretty well Saturday night.

Almost There With The Framing

Finally it looks as though we’re almost done with the framing.  There looks to be a few odds and ends to finish on the inside, and the screened porch still needs to be framed, but you can tell that things have finally moved along.

It’s pretty crazy how the house seems to get bigger the more that it’s closed in.  When we first saw the footers I was sure that we’d made a mistake … or that the builder had.  I was wrong.  The thing is plenty big.  Our builder has told us that it will look even bigger when the drywall goes in.  I’ll tell you, it can’t happen soon enough for us.  Every day we hate this apartment more.

Destin Vacation Continued

Thursday was Thanksgiving, but we’d already had our big meal.  What we hadn’t done is spend an entire day at the beach.  Thursday was the day.

We’d seen a public beach with a bath house and lots of parking right next to the The Crab Trap restaurant so we thought we’d try that out.  We hadn’t brought any of our beach stuff with us to Destin … no chairs, no towels, no beach toys for the boys.  So the first stop was Alvin’s to pick some of it up.  Hey, you can never have enough beach gear, right?  A few dollars lighter and we headed to the beach.

The Gulf was beautiful, the sand was white, the beach wasn’t crowded, and the sun was shining.  There were even several people flying kites.  We got our chairs setup and our bags arranged and Noah was off to the water.  I thought it was a little chilly, but he didn’t care.  I think he’d prefer to be a merman if that were possible.  Even though I thought it was kind of cold I decided to have a go at it anyway.  You have to get in the ocean whenever you can, right?  I don’t know if the water warmed up a little or if just running and diving in made a big difference, but the water actually felt great.  It was so refreshing and awesome to spend a little time playing with Noah.

After the beach we still weren’t done with the water.  We came back to the condo and everyone went to the outdoor pool.  It was getting dark and the air was cooling off, but the water was heated.  Most of the pool was three feet or less deep so Ben got to run around without the ultra-close supervision that we always give him around water, and the boys made friends with another kid who had some toys.  A great day in the water all around.

Friday was our last full day in Destin.  We thought that it would be fun to take a helicopter ride.  None of us had ever done it before so everyone was excited to give it a try … except for Ben.  He’s afraid to try anything.  Hopefully he’ll grow out of that.  The ride was short but pretty darned thrilling.  I’d never been up in a helicopter before, but I can’t wait to do it again.  We took a run up the beach and got to see some schools of fish.  We even saw a shark.

20151127_151121

After the helicopter ride Nana and Peepop wanted to head to an outlet mall that was there.  We didn’t have any interest in that so we decided to do mini-golf instead.  That seems to be becoming a tradition for us when we’re at a beach for any amount of time.  We’ll need to play mini-golf at least once.  We weren’t real careful with the score … but I won by a landslide.

After everyone got to back to the condo we had to decide on a place for dinner.  We’d heard good things about the place across the street, so we thought we’d check it out.  Even though it has an Irish name and décor it turns out that McGuire’s is a steak house.  When we got there the parking lot was pretty packed.  We were sure we were going to have to wait.  Thankfully, we were wrong.  We got seated right away.  Being as this was a steak house I just had to get a steak.  Boy, was that a good idea.  I wouldn’t hesitate to say that it’s one of the best steaks that I’ve ever had.  Everyone else was equally pleased with their food.  As a matter of fact, if we go back to Destin that restaurant will weigh heavily in our decision.

Considering how it started, with Allison’s kidney stone, our trip ended up being very fun and full of activities.  Time to come up with the next plan for getting out of this apartment.
